Measure what goes inside
Start with books, speakers, records, baskets or a television rather than a nominal shelf depth. Decide what should be behind doors and what belongs on display. A deep base cabinet and shallower upper shelving can serve different needs on the same wall.
Keep service points accessible
Map outlets, cable routes, heating registers and removable equipment before approving the elevation. Check door and drawer movement near a fireplace surround, window casing or adjoining wall.
Can built-ins fit an uneven alcove?
Yes. Field dimensions guide the cabinet sizes and the trim or scribe pieces that close gaps against existing walls.
