Shape a deck around the door you use, the view you want to keep and the space a table, chairs and walking paths actually take up.
Set the footprint from the house outward
Mark door thresholds, existing steps, planting and the furniture that will stay outside. Sketch where guests pass behind occupied chairs and where steps should meet the yard. This often changes the preferred deck shape before materials are selected.
Look below the finished boards
Discuss access beneath the deck, how water will drain and how existing siding interfaces with the new work. Compare decking samples outdoors, where sun exposure and texture are easier to judge.
Can we keep an existing deck frame?
It needs a site assessment before reuse can be included in the estimate. Bring any photos of the frame and connections, especially areas that will become difficult to see once new boards are installed.
