Backsplash Installation

Plan a kitchen backsplash around its most visible edges, including the range, outlets, cabinet ends and the point where tile meets the counter.

Set the tile layout before the first cut

Decide where the pattern starts and how it ends at exposed edges and inside corners. Centering a pattern behind the range can change the size of cuts at the opposite end. Lay out the tile with the actual grout joint to see the effect.

Finish the transitions

Confirm how the backsplash meets windowsills, upper cabinets and the countertop. Choose an edge finish and review grout samples beside the tile under the light the kitchen normally receives.

Can the backsplash be replaced with the countertops in place?

Often it can. The estimate should cover protection of the existing surface and any wall repair visible once the old tile comes off.
