Two kinds of Sunnyvale kitchen.
Eichler kitchens sit inside post-and-beam houses with exposed ceilings and radiant-heated slabs, so new lighting, venting and plumbing need routes that do not damage either. Sunnyvale's Eichler Design Guidelines address the exterior, which matters if a hood duct or vent shows on the roof.
Conventional Sunnyvale houses usually have an attic above the kitchen, which makes wiring and ducting simpler. There the main question is usually whether to open the kitchen toward the family room.

Sunnyvale's Building Safety Division reviews residential remodels, with applications submitted online and served by the One-Stop Permit Center at 456 W. Olive Ave.
- Check the exterior rules. Interior kitchen work is not covered by the Eichler guidelines, but visible exterior equipment can be, so we check early.
- Submit through E-OneStop. Plans and the application are uploaded online, and we answer the City's comments in the same system.
- Inspections through final. Rough electrical, plumbing and framing are inspected before covering, then the final inspection closes the permit.
