Garage Conversion in Cupertino
Cupertino’s ADU page answers the two garage questions homeowners ask first: replacement parking, and whether leftover garage space can become part of the main house. Call our Cupertino office at (650) 562-6324.
No replacement parking, and no split garage
The City’s ADU page (opens in a new tab) says you do not need to provide replacement parking when you convert a garage into an ADU. The same FAQ says an existing garage can become an ADU, but no portion of that garage may be converted into livable or usable space for the principal dwelling.
A garage conversion on that page is an ADU, not a junior ADU. The City explains that a junior ADU is created inside the walls of the principal home. Its answer on the ADU page says that, on a single-family property, the garage conversion would be the property’s only ADU and you could not also add a junior ADU. Confirm that pairing with Planning for your lot before you design a second unit. The ADU handout (opens in a new tab) is the companion summary.
Plan the utilities with the conversion
Water, power, and drainage routes are part of the scope even when the shell already exists. Our Cupertino ADU utility planning notes are the place to start that list. The office for this work is 10080 N Wolfe Road, Suite SW3-200, Cupertino, CA 95014, at (650) 562-6324.
Questions homeowners ask
Is a Cupertino garage conversion a junior ADU?
Usually no. The City’s ADU page says a junior ADU is created within the principal dwelling, and a garage conversion is an ADU. On that page, a single-family garage conversion is described as the property’s ADU, which can preclude a separate junior ADU. Confirm the combination with Planning.
