How San José reviews a bathroom remodel.
The City decides the permit path for each address. In general the deciding factor for a bathroom is whether fixtures or walls change.
- Fixtures stay in place. Swapping a vanity, toilet or tub in its current spot, with no framing work, is treated as a minor remodel and can be permitted online through SJPermits.
- Fixtures or walls move. Relocating the shower drain, adding a second sink or altering a wall makes the project a major remodel that goes through plan review with drawings.
- Inspections. City inspectors check the rough plumbing, electrical and waterproofing before walls close, then return for the final.
