How San Francisco permits a kitchen remodel.
The Department of Building Inspection decides the review route by scope, and nonstructural kitchen work is treated differently from projects that alter structure.
- Online for eligible scopes. Nonstructural kitchen remodels and related electrical or plumbing work may qualify for PermitSF, the City's online permit path.
- Review for larger changes. Kitchens that move walls or change structure go through in-house plan review, which can involve the Permit Center at 49 South Van Ness Ave.
- Inspection sequence. DBI inspects rough work before walls are closed and completes a final inspection when the kitchen is finished.
